rankinfraser were shortlisted with Verne Architecten of Ghent to design a new square for the municipality of Edegem near Antwerp.
The space had to be flexible enough to accommodate a range of programmed events such as markets and festivals. Also important was the role of the existing town hall which was to be extended into a Grand Cafe.
Our proposal was based on the concept of the 'field' and extended a simple surface over the entire square, using tree planting to define residential and commercial edges. A subtle system of grass joints acted as a poetic reminder of the previous agrarian uses.
