Garscube Landscape Link

Urban Public Realm

This project has been developed with 7N Architects for the Glasgow Canal Regeneration Partnership. The underpass forms the main pedestrian link between the developing Speirs Lock cultural quarter of Glasgow and the city centre. The route passes under two sections of the M8 motorway and two slip roads (below). Previously an unpleasant, dark and claustrophobic space the design intention was to open up the route as much as possible and to act as a catalyst to aid the development of Speirs Lock.

A continuous flowing surface opens up the space physically and visually and contrasts with a series of planted terraces formed out of gabion baskets and partially clad in cor-ten steel. These contrast with a series of coloured aluminium "flowers", fluttering 6m up in the air, that draw the visitor through the space in deliberate contrast to the solidity of the concrete, evoking a memory of Phoenix Park that once occupied the site.
