Bunston Grove

Bunston Knowe is the redevelopment of the former Ravenscraig Hospital site on the edge of Greenock. The development of 198 homes was split across two phases with the first phase consisting of 149 homes, 113 houses and 36 flats, for social rent and the second phase making up the remaining 49 homes. The project was developed by Link Group in partnership with Oak Tree Housing Association.

The new development is sensitively located to avoid impacting on important landscape features such as Bunston Knowe and to maximise the placemaking and biodiversity benefits of existing trees and woodland. The site is located on the edge of Greenock so a balance was sought between retaining a sense of living in a quiet landscape setting, whilst still promoting good walking, cycling and vehicular links to Greenock.

Existing road infrastructure was used where possible to create new streets within the development or to change the use to walking and cycling paths. A series of surface level suds basins have been integrated into the landscape design to form both landscape features and create more diverse habitats. Where possible grasscrete surfaces were used to limit the use of impermeable tarmac and aid surface permeability.

The project won the Housing Regeneration Project of the Year and Large Affordable Housing Development of the Year at the Scottish Home Awards 2023.
