Western Harbour Park

Western Harbour Park, once completed, will regenerate 4.4 hectare of currently derelict land into parkland alongside new residential development.  The park will be one of the largest new public parks created in Edinburgh for over a century. The park has been designed to offer a flexible open space tailored to the specific requirements of the exposed coastal location and the engineering constraints posed by developing on recently reclaimed land. The design reflects both character of Edinburgh and the needs of the emerging community at Western Harbour.

The spatial design is governed by several key, site specific principles including; the extent of stable ground and ground more prone to settlement, the provision of a strong framework of woodland planting, tree avenues supporting key connections and smaller ‘bosquet’ type blocks of trees. Taken together these organise the park into a series of variously scaled ‘outdoor rooms’ ranging from larger open fields to more intimate and sheltered space for community growing, outdoor play and nature classrooms.
